I've been hearing that some Bernie supporters will not vote for Hillary if she wins the Democratic nomination. I have also heard Hillary supporters saying they will not support Bernie.
Okaaaaaay… All you staunch supporters of one or the other… Before digging your heals in, let’s take stock of the fact that whatever differences there may be between Bernie and Hillary (and there are differences) are utterly inconsequential compared to the differences between either Bernie or Hillary and anyone offered by the Republicans. Let’s also consider that nobody elected as President will be able to do much of “what they say that want to accomplish” without the cooperation of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Nothing could have made that any clearer than the years following the 2010 mid‑term election. You remember the 2010 election, don’t you… That was the election where half of you fickle “progressive wannabes” sat on your hands because a non-Presidential election was just not important enough for you to bother with the hassle of voting. I know, I know… it really takes so much time out of the day… standing in line for hours… and no WIFI connection for most of that time… it’s soooo boring.
Well, DUH!!!! It’s gonna be even worse this year… cuz the Republicans are doing everything they can to make it difficult for you to vote. In fact, don’t be surprised if you show up to get your ballot… after waiting hours and hours to get it… and discover you can't vote at all because you don’t have the right kind of photo ID that those 2010 elected Republicans say you need now.
Let’s take a look at the likely possibilities…
President = D, Senate = R, House = R - This is what we have now. Gridlock on just about everything… But at least we have some kind of firewall against “The Draconian Far Right Agenda” … see below under “President = R, Senate = R, House = R”…
President = D, Senate = D, House = R - This is what we had between 2010 and 2014. 2014 was another mid-term where the “progressive wannabes” couldn’t be bothered. This is better than the current situation, but still difficult to get much done. And in this scenario we certainly won’t be seeing any “Progressive Revolutions.” We might be able to get a few centrist judges onto the SCOTUS. If we have 60 Dems in the Senate (and that is a very big IF), we might even be able to get one or two somewhat left-of-center judges onto the SCOTUS.
President = D, Senate = D, House = D - This is what we had at the beginning of President Obama's first term, and this is what we need to bring about the “Revolution” Bernie talks about. In fact, it probably will take 60 solidly Progressive seats in the Senate, a solid Progressive majority in the House, and a Progressive sweep of the State elections to get Bernie's Progressive Revolution. This is very unlikely to happen, because of the Congressional district gerrymandering we got from the Republican State Legislatures after that “not-so-important” 2010 mid-term election. That gerrymandering makes it next to impossible to restore a Democratic majority in the House until the next Constitutionally mandated census in 2020. So, as much as that Progressive Revolution may sound like what you want… Don’t get your hopes up!!!
President = R, Senate = R, House = R - With this we get The Draconian Far Right Agenda: Dismantling Social Security and Medicare, repealing the ACA, defunding the EPA and any effort to deal with Climate Change, deregulating pretty much everything, including letting the banks run our economy into the ground, a flat tax where the very poor pay more, and the very rich pay less. Oh yes... let’s not forget filling the Supreme Court with young Scalia-esc ideologues who will change the tenor of our laws for many decades to come… e.g. Citizens United, gutting the Voting Rights Act, bye-bye Roe v. Wade, and probably many laws fulfilling Ayn Rand’s “everyone for themselves” vision.
So… If you want a Progressive Revolution, and you can’t bring yourself to vote for Hillary in the General election… Or vice versa, if you can’t bring yourself to vote for someone who unabashedly describes himself as a Democratic “Socialist” (Oh… I can see the Republican hammer and sickle propaganda now) … Consider this… Sitting at home during the general election is equivalent to casting half a vote for Republican control of everything. Even if the Republicans pull a somewhat reasonable and vaguely centrist Presidential candidate out of the hat (casting aside both Trump and Cruz… which is not likely), what we will get with the Presidency and both houses of Congress in Republican hands is NOT gonna be a Progressive Revolution… quite the opposite!!!
Take your pick...
For the record, I really like Bernie’s ideas… and I agree, what we need to accomplish the things he proposes is nothing short of a “Progressive Revolution.” Also, much of what Hillary says makes good sense to me… but without at least regaining control of the Senate, I don’t think Hillary is likely to “get stuff done” as she claims she is better suited to do than Bernie. I'm sorry to say I don’t think we are likely to get much of what I want with either Bernie or Hillary… as much as I'd like to have it, I have no expectation of seeing a "Progressive Revolution." But, as much as I hate the notion of more gridlock with a Democratic President and Republicans controlling both houses of Congress, it beats the hell out of what we will get with a Republican, ANY Republican, in the White House. So, I am vigorously and enthusiastically supporting whoever we end up with as the Democratic nominee for President!!!
The Republicans are not as fickle as us Democrats, so you can be damn sure they will be voting for whoever their Presidential candidate and down ticket candidates may be. So... whether you are favoring Bernie or Hillary right now, please VOTE for the Democratic Presidential candidate in November... no matter who it is!!!!!
Oh yeah... one more thing... If it wouldn't be too much trouble... would you kindly vote in EVERY election!!!
