Have you notice the Vine is getting swamped with seeds??? Seeds have always been more common than articles, but lately it seems to be getting out of control. The point of this article is to call attention to something I call “Seed Abuse.” This is the practice of posting seeds but not contributing comments to the discussion spawned by the seed content. This practice monopolizes the front page, diminishing the diversity of content and I believe significantly diminishing the appeal of Newsvine.
I had noticed this practice some time ago with one particular long time Viner who has posted 4503 seeds but only made 2344 comments over the course of 7 years (as of today). That is only about one comment for every two seeds, averaging just under 2 seeds per day. Today I notice another seeder who posted his first seed only 5 days ago and has subsequently posted 117 seeds and made a total of 20 comments. That is an average of 23.4 seeds per day with an average of 0.17 comments per seed.
- What is the seeders intention???
- How does this practice affect Newsvine???
- What can be done about this???
My feeling is that people who post content on the Vine, ESPECIALLY seeds, need to earn future rights to post more content by participating in the discussion that is spawned by their seeds. If they do not participate, then they are just serving as a proxy for other news sites. This is bad for the Vine and bad for those of us who are here to engage in productive discussion… and it is certainly does NOT provide any opportunity to “get smarter here.”
